Appreticeship

Hairstylist is a restricted certified trade regulated by the Apprenticeship and Certification Act. A person working in this trade must hold a valid Certificate of Qualification or be registered as an apprentice. Most apprenticeships take two to five years to complete. With the 1500 hr hairstyling program the apprenticeship is usually ten months to one year after the ten months of full-time or part-time schooling.

Training
There are two routes to take to obtain the hairstylist license:

(a) 1500 hr of in-school training at a private school or college and 2000 hrs of apprenticeship. This takes approximately 1½-2 years depending on the work schedule and hours. To obtain a total of 3500 hours.

or

(b) Register as an apprentice with the apprenticeship training office (you must have an employer to sponsor/hire you for this route) - Then while completing the on the job training, the apprentice must obtain 2 levels of theoretical training (2 courses of 240 hours each) for a total of 480 hours. This route is longer as the apprentice must obtain a total of 5500 hours.

*For route (a) - See info on the 1500 hr hairstyling program for prices and course dates. *For route (b) - Once you have an employer, register with the apprenticeship office, and then register with Oakville College.

Each route has an in-school portion and an on-the-job training portion. The 1500 hour in-school results in a faster license.
